New 112,000 square foot community shopping center transforms City of El Monte downtown area, bringing residents brand named retailers, restaurants and outdoor gathering spaces.
The City of El Monte celebrated the opening of Santa Fe Trail Plaza on Thursday, November 12, with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the shopping center’s first two anchor store openings, Superior Grocers and Petco. Festivities included live entertainment, food tastings, free product samples and prize giveaways.
Developed by The Festival Companies, Santa Fe Trail Plaza broke ground just a year ago, fast-tracking construction to facilitate Superior Grocers and Petco’s plans to open in time for the 2015 holiday season. Located at the intersection of Valley Blvd and Santa Anita Ave, the 15 acre site’s first phase includes over 110,000 square feet of retail stores and restaurants. The grand opening of Superior Grocers, one of the largest independently-owned full service grocery store chains in Southern California, and national pet supply store Petco, kick-off a roster of popular brand name retailers and casual dining restaurants that will soon open at the center. Grand opening announcements for Junior department store giant, Ross Dress For Less, Chipotle Mexican Grill, The Flame Broiler, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Menchies Frozen Yogurt, The Pizza Studio and Wingstop The Wing Experts will be released shortly.
“We are excited to open Santa Fe Trail Plaza today and bring to the residents of the City of El Monte, the first new major shopping center project of its size and kind in this city in over 25 years,” said Rosalind Schurgin, CEO, The Festival Companies. “We have created a contemporary shopping center and gathering place that is unique and welcoming to the community. Our goal is to bring value, variety and quality to our City of El Monte residents, with popular brand name stores and eateries that are new to the area, situated within a welcoming environment that includes plazas, outdoor casual dining areas, and shaded walkways. We sincerely thank the City of El Monte for their support and efforts, which have made it possible to open this center within one year of the breaking ground ceremony. By this time next year, we will be breaking ground on Phase II, which will increase the size of the center by an additional 60,000 square feet of building area. Phase II plans include sit-down restaurants and additional anchor stores, that will be complementary to Phase I and will further expand the offerings at Santa Fe Trail Plaza.”
Amongst those in attendance were City of El Monte Council members including Mayor Pro Tem, Bart Patel; City Treasurer, Jerry Velasco; and Councilwoman Victoria Martinez.
“The Grand Opening of Santa Fe Trail Plaza is a momentous day for the City of El Monte and is the beginning of the renaissance for our great city,” said Bart Patel, Mayor Pro Tem of El Monte. “Just less than a year ago, the City of El Monte and The Festival Companies broke ground on the construction of Santa Fe Trail Plaza and one year later our dreams have become a reality as the center opens for business. We are pleased to welcome national and regional brand name stores to the City of El Monte, which we anticipate will be a source of new jobs for our community. We encourage our residents to visit Santa Fe Trail Plaza, support our new businesses, and connect with other community members in this beautiful new location.”
“I am thrilled to welcome Superior Grocers to the City of El Monte and to kick off our ‘Healthy El Monte’ campaign,” said Councilwoman Victoria Martinez. “Now the residents of the City of El Monte can find wholesome options right here in their own neighborhood with Superior Grocers’ wide variety of fresh produce, quality meats and seafood, and naturally nutritious foods. I encourage our entire community start their path to a healthier lifestyle by shopping at Superior Grocers, eating well and exercising, and sharing your progress by posting on your social media channels and tagging #HealthyElMonte.”
Mimi Song, CEO of Superior Grocers, stated, “Thank you for welcoming Superior Grocers to the City of El Monte. The residents of this community deserve the best, and we look forward to offering a premium selection of products at the lowest possible prices, while catering to our local customer needs. We are also proud to provide over 100 new jobs to the community.”
The project site, spanning an estimated 15 acres comprised over 50 individual lots was assembled over a 10-year period by Festival and the City’s former Redevelopment Agency. The opening of Santa Fe Trail Plaza marks a successful conclusion to exhaustive efforts by both the Developer and City staff to complete a difficult assemblage of a blighted area situated in the heart of the City’s commercial and business district. The site also had the distinction of being the actual end of the historic Santa Fe Trail, leading to the center’s name branding “Santa Fe Trail Plaza.”
